Training

Throughout Tom’s professional career, he has used his expertise and experience
to provide training on visual journalism topics and multimedia storytelling to
students and professionals.  He began as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Florida,
and continued teaching at various professional seminars and workshops, including
the Eddie Adams Photo Workshop and multimedia training sessions sponsored by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Miami, and the National Press Photographers Association.  Drawing on a broad industry background, Tom has
provided inspiring coaching and mentoring to individuals who have produced stories
that have won journalism’s most prestigious print and broadcast awards.


  • Provide instruction on multimedia storytelling, editorial planning, tool use and
    optimal work flow.
  • Offer coaching sessions on creating effective multimedia storytelling by blending
    photos, videos, audio information graphics and text.
  • Offer training on use of social networks, and new digital distribution platforms for multimedia storytelling.
  • Create and distribute handouts on multimedia training for editing key media
    elements (photography, video, audio, text etc.).
  • Teach basics of still photography and audio slideshow construction.
  • Assess individual skills, using portfolio reviews and critique sessions.
